Old Sauk River Hike and Hammock Lounge

Old Sauk River Hike and Hammock Lounge

Because this hike starts out in an old growth forest, I was a bit worried if there would be good hammock trees on this hike. I had just purchased a hammock from Higher Elevation Hammocks, a local company, and this was to be the girls first time getting to "hang" out in it.

The trail bounces back and forth, but stays mostly right on the Sauk River. We took all of the safe side trails that were already overused paths and found one very peaceful pool with some large rocks that were perfect to climb! Some of the other side trails led to views of the river, that the actual trail would eventually show anyway.

After about two miles, the trail led us from the open banks of the river, straight into a dark mossy forest that was perfect for our hammock! I hung it up really close to the river so the girls could listen to it flowing by as they relaxed and played.

I purchased the ENO straps for $29.95 that come with loops already sewn in and it was so easy to hang. There are some straps that would be a bit lighter, but loops would need to be tied into them to hook each side of the hammock up.

The girls were asking when the next time we can use the hammock will be even as they hung on this hike. I would say that they love it!!

This trail was extremely easy for my three and seven year old kids. There are no hills to speak of and the trail is beautiful. It was very close to the same effort as close by Beaver Lake Trail except this trail stayed mostly in deep, green forest.
